It’s that time again…yes, costumes, candy, and pumpkin carving! While I love and welcome the Fall/Winter and of course the change in temperature, I am not the biggest fan of Halloween admittedly. (Definitely more of a Christmas kinda girl you could say!)
But what I’ve recently discovered…is that my boys are huge fans! Why just today my youngest requested to go trick or treating for the first time and he’s only 3!
As a Christian mom I find myself conflicted on this particular holiday. I have no shame in letting my children dress up in their favorite costumes and collect candy from our neighbors! However, I do have a few Halloween rules:
- No dressing up as anything scary or evil! (Demons, devils, and movie murderers…a definite no no.)
- No celebrating anything evil!
- No decorating the house with evil props or symbols! (Jack-o-lanterns are ok!)
Call me uptight or a prude, but it’s very important to me to instill Christian values into my children, even if that means they “miss out” on things other kids may typically do during the Halloween season.
When my friends at Oriental Trading reached out to me to review this year’s costume selection, I said of course and let my boys pick out what they wanted to be (as long as it followed rule #1). To my surprise they both chose “superhero” costumes (now I say to my surprise because one is 8 and the other 3)…
Thus I decided to theme this month’s festivities “Have a SUPER Halloween!”
My youngest son chose a Spiderman costume (he’s slightly obsessed with the guy you could say) to match his favorite pair of PJs and his new backpack we got him for school. True story: he’s been hounding me about whether his costume came in the mail, like literally since two minutes after I ordered it!

When I finally revealed the long awaited package (you know the one I had tucked away in the garage for a couple weeks, until a couple days ago because like I predicted he’s been changing into it non-stop throughout the day since he’s uncovered it) he couldn’t wait to try it on. He literally STOLE the costume out of the box when I wasn’t looking and ran off with it, only to return as the “Spiderman!”
What I love about Oriental Trading’s costume selection, were the fake muscles. I don’t know why making little kids look buff is so cute, but that’s what really sold me on this suit for him, aside from the mask. This style suit is the “toddler” version of the costume, so the mask doesn’t completely cover the face like an older boy’s costume would. A great design feature, so their nose and mouth are completely clear of material for breathing and choking hazards. Yaasss, Mom approved!
To be honest, I thought the mask might look a little funny on my son from how it looked in the stock picture, but I was absolutely wrong, he looks adorable in it! Actually the only funny looking thing about the whole costume is how Mommy mistakenly ordered it one size too small, so the pants just barely graze the ankles. (Oops!…good thing for me he’s too young too care.)
Well, on to part two of our hero’s tale….now introducing “The Flash,” the fastest boy alive!
My son and his cousins can not stop talking about “Barry Allen” they call him. I think it all started because some of his cousins follow the popular tv show “The Flash” on Netflix. My son doesn’t watch the show, (there are a few scenes that are a bit inappropriate in my opinion) but he’s still an avid fan. When I asked him what he wanted to be…he immediately requested the famous superhero.

Unlike my youngest he didn’t harass me about the arrival of his costume, until one day his cousins were all over and he politely asked to bring it out to show it off. They all went crazy as soon as they saw the package and wanted to try it on too…and did! They passed it around taking turns being the fastest man alive each for a few minutes at a time. It was pandemonium! I literally had to confiscate the costume, so they wouldn’t mess it up before I could even shoot it!
It was then however, that I found out I ordered his costume one size too big! #UltimateMomFail for ordering both costumes in the wrong size. I was afraid that he was on the higher end of the scale on the size chart and ordered one size up to be sure. Bad idea, follow the size chart! No biggie though, he still loves it and mommy just has to do a few alterations. I rolled the pants up for the shoot, but may just cut and hem them for the big day.
Nonetheless, the size situation did not hinder the fun, nor the imaginations of these two little fellows.
We had to come up with a super cool story-line of course. So, they imagined that all the Halloween candy in the land had been stolen (not really though, Mommy just hasn’t bought any yet, #momcrastination.)
The two heroes wanted to see who was worthy enough to take on the “Candy Bandit”…aka their Dad with a little brotherly competition. Both boys chose to battle it out superhero style, with a grueling match of ultimate arm wrestling…
It was a close match, but Flash’s lightning speed was too much for little Spiderman’s clutch…and so “The Flash” won and stood triumphantly in his victory…
But in the end, he remembered they were brothers and decided to band together to take down the “Candy Bandit” and save Halloween for all the boys and girls around the world!
Be safe out there moms and don’t forget to Have a SUPER Halloween!
